1. Phir Se Shaadi

Written and directed by Imran Rasheed, Phir Se Shaadi examines the Islamic tradition by which a man and woman cannot remarry after divorce, unless the woman marries another man, consummates the marriage and then the second husband willingly divorces. The custom meant to discourage frivolous divorces, ends up causing untold misery for the woman. Rasheed turns the serious subject into a comedy-musical, but still raises all the pertinent points.





2. Dohri Zindagi

Gurleen Judge directs a play based on a Vijaydhan Detha story, in which a man forcibly brings up his daughter as a son. He then gets her married to a girl for dowry. This story brings to the fore this unhealthy obsession for male children, and asks the audience to spare a thought for the young women whose lives are ruined.





3.Ladies Sangeet

In Purva Naresh’s play, set during the cheerful mayhem of a wedding, the bride’s estranged parents are finally forced to face the truth the families were both avoiding for years-- that the father broke up his marriage because he was gay.





4. Loitering

Satchit Puranik’s play, based on the Why Loiter? Movement, examines the issue of women’s safe access to public spaces, through the real-life experiences of women and some men.





5. Naribai

Sushmita Mukherjee’s one-woman show is about a folk performer who belongs to a tribe that forces its girls into sex work, and how she rises above the condition of exploitation and poverty.





6. Tutak

Saggherr Loadhii’s play is about a man trying to come to terms with his sexuality, in an attempt to keep his wife, boyfriend and overbearing father happy.





7. Naqqash

Directed by Rajit Kapur, Naqqash, is about police brutality and the helplessness of a village of the oppressed.





8. Dhaaba

In a playful way, with this object theatre performance set in a dhaaba, Choiti Ghosh makes a witty case for how suspicion of the other works in our society.





9. Naeema Ek Udaan Ki Kahaani

Performed by the underprivileged kids of the Salaam Bombay Foundation, this play, directed by Sachin Jadhav, is about a girl who tries to prove to her family that she is not a liability and that she can do as much for them as a boy.





10. Gandhi The Musical

This exuberant musical, written and directed by Danesh R. Khambata shows that Gandhi’s message about social equality, non-violence and self-determination is as relevant today as it was in his time.





Subjects that other mass media will not touch--or at least not take seriously till there some commercial gain-- theatre is confident enough to pick up. Whether it is LGBT rights, police brutality or police brutality, theatre finds a way of getting people to think about issues.
