For some it was English, for some, Hindi, and for others, Marathi. India boasts of 22 official languages, even though several claim that in actuality, India has over a 1000 languages! Even though learning a whole new language can be pure hell, one of the best ways to go about it is to actually put your knowledge to use, and communicate. Which is exactly what Anup Maiya did, through the initiative, ‘Kannada Gottilla.’
Kannada Gottilla is a phrase commonly used to denote one’s inability to speak the language, to locals who unknowingly begin a conversation in their mother tongue with a migrant. In conversation with The Better India, Anup said he had moved to Pune for a few years, and decided to learn Marathi. He couldn’t find any online courses or tools to help him, that would help him grasp basic concepts of the language, which is how the idea behind Kannada Gottilla came about.
