Economists fear changes to NREGA but fund squeeze is already curtailing its operations

State governments are beginning to feel the pinch of the Ministry of Rural Development's cap on spending on the employment guarantee scheme. In its bid to streamline the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (2005), the National Democratic Alliance government has been effecting a series of changes to the scheme, leading 28 economists to write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing dismay on Monday. ??t is alarming to hear of multiple moves (some of them going back to the preceding government) to dilute or restrict the provisions of the Act,??the economists wrote. ??ages have been frozen in real terms, and long delays in wage payments have further reduced their real value.??/p>
