Paul Verhoeven’s Elle begins with the shocking audio, followed by the visual, of the titular character being raped by a man in a ski mask. Yet, it’s her reaction that’s even more shocking. Elle simply tidies up later and carries on with her life. She tells her friends and ex-husband about the assault, though not the police. She would probably be happy to continue as if nothing untoward had happened but the already murky waters soon becoming a lot murkier.
