Employees working in the public transport sector in Malappuram district of Kerala are part of a unique charity initiative where they often dedicate a day’s earnings to the cause of helping the poor and sick. The buses, autorickshaws and taxis that are part of the drive often flaunt special banners announcing the cause for which the donation would be made. “Malappuram and its people are known for their philanthropic culture. The people respond zestfully whenever there is a genuine case. The charity drives by the bus workers and autorickshaw drivers are a reflection of that culture,” Kiliyamannil Ajmal told The Hindu. Kiliyamannil Ajmal heads a committee that is helping raise funds for a man suffering from renal failure.
