India has achieved a reduction of more than 20 per cent in new HIV infections between 2000 and 2014, according to a report released by UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, at Addis Ababa on Tuesday. The report, titled “How AIDS changed everything—MDG 6: 15 years, 15 lessons of hope from the AIDS response”, states that the world has exceeded the targets specified by the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to halt and reverse the spread of HIV. The incidence of new HIV cases has dropped by 35 per cent and AIDS-related deaths have fallen by 41 per cent since targets were set under the MDGs. The report says that the world is on track to ending the global AIDS epidemic by 2030.
