PM-led climate panel to pick issues for Obama talks

Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led council on climate change, which was reconstituted last year, will hold its first meeting on Monday and brainstorm on fine tuning renewable energy issues which are to be taken up with US President Barack Obama during his India visit. The high-level panel, comprising senior ministers and experts from within and outside the government, will also review all national plans to fight climate change and suggest additional measures which may be taken up through policy and budgetary interventions. Since India wants to proceed on its low-carbon growth path through use of energy with utmost efficiency and also by adopting solar and wind power in a big way, it will seek US cooperation both in terms of investment and technology transfer. Though India will not take up the climate change issue by specifying its peaking year like what China did in its agreement with the US in November last year, it may outline its renewable energy goal quite specifically without compromising its development agenda.
