All the digital data we're creating—44 trillion gigabytes by 2020—has to go somewhere. The "where" of the near future, many researchers believe, will be on DNA strands, which can store thousands more gigabytes than the best iPhone on the market. Millions of years of evolution have perfected this form of biological information storage. Scientists have been talking about using DNA to store data for years, but the application's been limited so far by high cost and errors in the data. Today, in a study published in Science, researchers announced they've made the process 100 per cent error-free and 60 per cent more efficient compared to previous results—approaching the theoretical maximum for DNA storage.
