America Ferrera is all about big-screen girl power

Count on America Ferrera, 30, to play empowered women.

“I love that my character in How to Train Your Dragon 2 (out June 13) is a born adventurer and leader.”Animated films depend on what an actor brings into the recording room, and over the years, there’s been a blurred line between me and Astrid. I like playing characters who are out there achieving stuff, not standing around looking pretty and talking about boys.” Her favorite animated heroines? “The girls in Frozen are adventurous and masters of their fate. I like the main girl in The Croods. She’s fun and exciting.” Plus, she just loves a good girl power flick in general – as both a viewer and a star. “I remember growing up loving a movie called Now and Then, about four best friends – (played by) Christina Ricci, Gaby Hoffman, Thora Birch and Ashleigh Astin Moore. It was about their relationships with one another. For me it was so satisfying to be a part of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, which felt like a version of that story for a new generation. I found it exciting and empowering to have friendships with other girls. Your friends were your whole world, and they were really empowering to me when I was younger.”
