Amol Gupte feels comfortable and sane in the world of Children
by Yash Saboo November 20 2017, 4:54 pm Estimated Reading Time: 2 mins, 19 secsAmol Gupte has always been fond of children, therefore it has never been a task for him to direct children-centric movies. While many directors wouldn't want to work with so many children at once because it requires a level of effort and focus, Amol Gupte feels most comfortable around them.
He has always been an avid reader and when he thinks about the decline in reading, especially in young children, it worries him. That is one of the main reasons he directs movies like Sniff, Stanley Ka Dabba and Hawa Hawaii. "I don't judge them, but I can entertain them. This is another way of bringing mystery into their lives," says Amol.
He rarely auditions children for any of his movies, instead, he hosts free acting workshops and scouts young talent. Working with children has its joy, their innocence and curiosity fascinates him.
We definitely do have a crowd for children-based movies, every animated Disney or Pixar movie has a houseful of little children and parents alike. From fantasy fiction like Harry Potter, The Fantastic Beasts, Percy Jackson, to Tintin, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Beauty and the Beast, the audience has seen it all and loved it all. Amol Gupte's Stanley Ka Dabba and Hawa Hawaii received immense appreciation, unlike his movie Sniff which soured the box office. Amol believes that a movie will live as long as it's given wings from the distributors and theatres, Sniff didn't receive any enthusiasm from anywhere. We shall not talk about Taare Zameen Par particularly since it had Aamir Khan and that stardom gives any movie a different platform.
I believe once we start encouraging these films specially made for the little ones, there would be many more from each corner. It requires a lot of courage to be the sole bearer of "children-centric" film industry which is struggling. We need many more like Amol Gupte to lift up the spirits.
Amol is currently prepping for his next movie, a biopic on Saina Nehwal for which he has already picked Shraddha Kapoor, he is patient and says that they will shoot whenever Shraddha is ready and comfortable. He doesn't want a hurried production, biopic needs gravitas and he is ready to wait.
He absolutely adores Saina for her humble nature and simplicity, even after achieving international success and trashing Marin who is the reigning Olympic champion and Saina trashed her four times when she was at her peak!
Well, I for one love the fact that we have someone like Amol Gupte holding the reins when it comes to meaningful movies for children, it's definitely much needed now when any type of pervert comedy receives a U/A certificate and children are left to be inspired by not so perfect idols trashing goons and wooing women.
