Filmmaker Pahlaj Nihalani was appointed the new board chairperson after Leela Samson, appointed in early 2011, quit protesting clearance to MSG, and alleging political interference. A number of board members also resigned following her exit.There’s never any dearth of drama over the functioning of the CBFC, which is a favourite punching bag for filmmakers who see it as too conservative a body, but this brouhaha has beaten all recent ‘controversies’. Reports listing the new board chief and members also highlighted the fact that many of them had links to the BJP or were from the party. Nihalani has made a campaign video for Modi, and among the members are ‘RSS ideologue’ and editor of Marathi weekly Vivek, Ramesh Patange; the BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Howrah, George Baker; scriptwriter Mihir Bhuta, whose latest work includes a script on Modi, and BJP general secretary Vani Tripathi Tikoo.
