CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (AP) — Central Falls High School has received a $60,000 grant from Hollywood’s leading charity in honor of Oscar-nominated actress Viola Davis, who grew up in the city.

The award from the Entertainment Industry Foundation was announced on Thursday at the school. Half of the money will go to the Thespian Society and the other half will go to the chess team.

The school system says the grant is in honor of Davis’s support of an upcoming childhood hunger campaign in partnership with The Safeway Foundation.

Davis spoke to graduating seniors at the high school last year. She is a member of the class of 1983.

She has given money to the library and a charter school in Central Falls.
