Preserving and Elevating Embroidered Art

January 29, 2025, Mumbai, India – Milaaya Art Gallery, an initiative of the Milaaya Art Foundation and a division of Milaaya Embroideries, stands as a unique platform dedicated exclusively to fibre art. Established by Gayatri Khanna twenty-five years ago, Milaaya Embroideries has become a globally recognized embroidery house, employing skilled artisans in its internationally compliant studio in Mumbai. The gallery’s distinctive focus on embroidered art—often referred to as "fibre art" in international markets—sets it apart as a pioneering institution in this innovative medium.

The gallery has actively participated in prestigious art fairs, including the India Art Fair 2024 and Art Mumbai 2024, and has showcased its collections through solo exhibitions in London, Delhi, Mumbai, and Madras.

The Milaaya Art Foundation was established to preserve and elevate traditional hand embroidery, a craft deeply embedded in India’s cultural heritage yet facing the threat of extinction. Through various initiatives, the foundation uplifts artisans, ensuring that their skills are not only preserved but also celebrated. A percentage of all Milaaya Art proceeds is dedicated to the foundation, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to community development and the sustainable growth of this trade.

Milaaya recognizes the invaluable contributions of its artisans, ensuring that their names are prominently credited alongside the artworks they create. This acknowledgment highlights their craftsmanship and fosters a sense of ownership and pride among the artisans.

Terra: Unravelling the Earth’s Story in Embroidery

Milaaya Art Gallery is proud to announce the preview of Terra: Unravelling the Earth’s Story in Embroidery, a groundbreaking group exhibition featuring the works of acclaimed artists Nikhil Chopra, Ranbir Kaleka, Manjunath Kamath, and Shaurya Kumar. These artists have created new artworks specifically for the medium of fibre art, a significant departure from traditional artistic expressions. The exhibition, meticulously brought to life by Milaaya’s hand embroidery artisans, will be held at the gallery’s location in Kemp’s Corner, South Mumbai.

Curated by Dr. Arshiya Lokhandwala, Terra explores the concept of Earth as both a physical and symbolic entity. Through the tactile medium of fibres, the exhibition presents layered narratives of ecological fragility, cultural interconnectedness, and the intricate interdependencies of nature. Adding to the depth of the exhibition is the involvement of Nikhil Chopra, a renowned artist and curator of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, who brings his distinct vision and commitment to this innovative medium.

Milaya ensures that each embroidered artwork reflects time-honoured techniques, symbolizing enduring artistic excellence and positioning itself as a valuable collector’s item. Terra extends this philosophy by blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary artistic expression, forging a new path in the world of fine art.

Speaking on the gallery’s transformative journey, Gayatri Khanna stated, “The goal of Milaaya Embroideries has always been to find innovative ways to sustain the craft. Introducing this talent to the world of fine art felt like a natural progression. By creating collectable pieces, we aim to give artisans both creative freedom and an enduring platform. The overwhelming response from artists, critics, and collectors validates our vision and the potential of this unique medium.”
