Cosmic Heart Gallery presents Curling Ribbons, a captivating exhibition of photographic abstractions by the Argentine-German artist Gerardo Korn. This extraordinary collection offers an immersive experience, inviting viewers to explore the hidden beauty of nature through Korn’s transformative lens and modern aesthetic. The exhibition marks a milestone in Korn’s artistic journey, where the ordinary is elevated to the extraordinary, forging a unique synthesis of realism and abstraction.

Unveiling Nature’s Subtle Elegance

Curling Ribbons reflects Korn’s two-year exploration of natural forms, focusing on the often-overlooked curls and textures of foliage. These delicate details, hidden in nature’s quiet corners, are transformed into evocative compositions that celebrate simplicity and complexity. Speaking about his work, Korn says, “To create these images is to connect with nature’s soul and, in doing so, redefine my artistic journey. The interplay of light, shadow, and colour opens up a dialogue between the tangible and the abstract, challenging the way we see and experience the world.”

Korn’s photographic process begins with raw encounters in nature, often under challenging conditions. These initial captures are meticulously refined using light and colour manipulation, resulting in artwork that feels simultaneously grounded in reality and unbound by it. Each piece bridges the gap between the familiar and the unfamiliar, creating a transformative experience for viewers.

A Testament to Creative Vision

Cosmic Heart Gallery, renowned for curating thought-provoking art, feels honoured to host Korn’s works for Indian audiences. Jalpa H. Vithalani, curator and founder of the gallery, remarks, “Gerardo Korn’s Curling Ribbons is not just an exhibition; it is an experience. His ability to extract elegance from the unnoticed and present it with such modernity is a testament to the infinite possibilities of creative exploration. It’s a privilege to showcase this collection, which is both deeply personal and universally resonant.”

Korn’s journey as an artist has been deeply influenced by his time with renowned Argentine painter Guillermo Roux. This mentorship sparked a shift in his style from impressionistic photography to contemporary experimentation. His current works, printed on fine art Hahnemühle PhotoRag paper and framed using modern techniques, represent a culmination of his evolution—art that is as conceptually rich as it is visually striking.

The Duality of Korn’s Artistic Vision

At the heart of Curling Ribbons is Korn’s innovative approach to Visual Art Photography, where natural forms and everyday objects are reimagined as striking, abstract compositions. Jalpa H. Vithalani observes, “Gerardo Korn’s work transcends traditional photography, presenting a groundbreaking fusion he defines as Visual Art Photography. By reimagining natural forms through light, colour, and abstraction, his pieces are not just photographs but powerful visual statements intended to be hung as fine art. This innovative approach positions Korn’s work at the intersection of photography and contemporary art.”

This fusion of abstraction and realism is a hallmark of Korn’s journey, reflecting his dual pursuit of rooted observation and soaring creativity. As he continues to evolve, Korn’s work challenges conventional boundaries, inspiring a rethinking of how we engage with art and nature.

Gerardo Korn, an Argentine-German art photographer and visual artist, began his journey at the age of 15 with a Minolta SR-T 101 camera gifted by his father during a transformative trip through Asia. Early experiences in Indonesia, Hong Kong, and Japan ignited his passion for photography. His time in India, particularly in cities like New Delhi, Agra, and Kolkata, left a lasting impact on his artistic sensibilities.

Over the years, Korn’s works have been showcased internationally, including at the Guadalajara International Book Fair in Mexico (2014), the Centro Cultural Borges in Buenos Aires (2016), and exhibitions in Germany, such as at Argentine diplomatic venues and Wintershall in Kassel (2017–2018). His street photography project Costanera Sur earned an Honorable Mention at the IPA International Photo Awards. His film project, The Goddess in the Pool, inspired by Guillermo Roux, received accolades at festivals including the Mumbai International Cult Film Festival and the Tagore International Film Festival.

In 2024, Korn debuted in decorative and abstract art at Hamburg’s Livia Lisboa Fotokunst gallery, reflecting his evolving style influenced by Roux’s philosophy of finding beauty in the ordinary. These works, alongside new pieces, feature prominently in Curling Ribbons at Cosmic Heart Gallery in Mumbai.

For twelve years, Cosmic Heart Gallery has been a trailblazer in curating innovative and meaningful art. Known for its commitment to fostering connections between artist, viewer, and space, the gallery has earned a reputation for presenting works that resonate deeply with audiences. From showcasing Indian artists at ArtBAB in Bahrain to collaborating with Sir JJ School of Art, the gallery has consistently pushed boundaries.

Highlights of its legacy include a musical evening at the Haji Ali Dargah featuring Persian calligraphic art, presenting Raja Ravi Varma’s original limestone presses, and representing India at international forums like the United Nations. Jalpa H. Vithalani reflects, “The mission of Cosmic Heart Gallery has always been to bring the extraordinary into the everyday, and Gerardo Korn’s work epitomizes this vision. His art reminds us that beauty exists in the smallest details, waiting to be discovered and celebrated.”

Bridging Cultures and Celebrating Collaboration

Curling Ribbons also highlights the collaboration between Cosmic Heart Gallery and the Consulate General and Promotion Centre of the Argentine Republic in Mumbai. Daniel N. Quer Confalonieri, Consul General and Director of the Trade Centre of Argentina in Mumbai, shares, “As the year comes to a close, we have the pleasure of opening the doors of our Consulate to share with you the unique work of Gerardo Korn. His impressive Visual Art photos, curated by the talented Jalpa Vithalani, showcase the soft power of Argentina in Mumbai.”

Since its inception in 2009, the Consulate has fostered long-lasting relations between Argentina and India through cultural and artistic initiatives. This partnership with Cosmic Heart Gallery underscores the potential of art to bridge cultures and spark dialogue.

Visitors to Curling Ribbons are not just observing an exhibition; they are engaging in a conversation. Each piece invites reflection, awe, and a renewed appreciation for the unseen wonders of the natural world. As Cosmic Heart Gallery continues to push artistic boundaries, this exhibition stands as a testament to the transformative power of creativity, curiosity, and collaboration.
