It's one of those highly awaited times in Hollywood as Emmy nominations are announced. As usual, the competition is tough. There were a few surprises as well. For starters, Netflix made history by beating out HBO for the most Emmy nominations and ending HBO's 17-year long run! And the hilarious and much loved Modern Family's 9th season didn't get nominated for an Emmy for the first time in its 9 year run. After a year's gap, the much hyped and everybody's favourite – Game of Thrones is back, to sweep away all the main Emmy nominations.

In addition to HBO’s marquee drama, the category also includes The Crown, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Americans, Westworld Stranger Things and This Is Us. The Handmaid’s Tale‘s Samira Wiley and The Blacklist’s Ryan Eggold announced the Emmy nominations on Thursday, including those in the competitive drama category.

While the hit comedy show Veep went on a production break, the comedy category is open for all. Going by how Donald Glover is taking over 2018, the much acclaimed Atlanta looks to be the frontrunner, though Amazon’s super funny and insightful The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a tough fight. It is a nostalgic series about a female comedian in the 1950s which also won the Golden Globes this year.

Continuing with the surprises, Sandra Oh made history by becoming the first Asian actor to be nominated in the Best Actress category for her turn as an obsessed detective BBC America’s Killing Eve. She’ll compete against two women vying for their final chance at Emmy’s gold in their respective series: Claire Foy, who will pass on the role of Queen Elizabeth II to Olivia Colman for The Crown’s third season, and Keri Russell, the long-overlooked star of critical darling The Americans.
