Philanthropist Bill Gates believes that the diseases malaria and polio could be eradicated within the next 15 years, with polio gone as soon as 2019.Speaking at a Global Citizen event on combating global poverty at Facebook’s UK headquarters in London, Mr Gates said work to tackle the diseases was gradually shrinking the map of countries in which they are still prevalent.
The only other disease ever eradicated is smallpox, which was declared gone in 1980.
