“Feminized Poverty”: Poverty A Woman’s Face?

Poverty has different connotations depending upon the circumstances under which we construe it. One such connotation is gender based poverty or feminized poverty. Feminization of poverty occurs when gender becomes a determinant of poverty, creating a cycle in which inequalities between men and women leads to women becoming increasingly poorer than men. The concept has pointed out the need to acknowledge that poverty affects men and women in different ways, and gender is a factor just like age, ethnic origin, and geographical location, among others which influence poverty and increase women’s vulnerability to it.
