While India has been reporting a steady decline in its maternal mortality rate, the country still accounts for the largest number of maternal deaths in the world. In 2010, India recorded 56,000 maternal and 1.3 million infant deaths ??the highest for any country. According to the Millennium Development Goals, India?? target is to reduce its MMR by three-quarters, from 437 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births in 1990-91, to 109 by the end of 2015.
