High cholesterol along with other risk factors like high blood pressure and obesity is the main cause of heart diseases. Increasing levels of cholesterol are mainly dangerous because cholesterol can get deposited on the walls of arteries along with other fatty substances to block them and lead to a condition called atherosclerosis, a major risk factor for heart diseases like coronary artery disease, heart attack and stroke.
