The problem could get much worse if the parasite reaches Africa, warn experts An analysis of blood samples from malaria patients in 10 Asian and African countries has found that resistance to artemisinin, world’s most effective antimalarial drug, is now quite common in Southeast Asia. However, no signs of resistance to the drug have been found in African countries. The study, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine on July 31, says: “Artemisinin resistance in Plasmodium falciparum has emerged in Southeast Asia and now poses a threat to the control and elimination of malaria. Mapping the geographic extent of resistance is essential for planning containment and elimination strategies.”
