PATNA: Incidence of maternal deaths has shown decline in Bihar though the 208 deaths per one lakh live births are still one of the highest in the country. What should worry policymakers more is the fact that many deaths go unreported and that most of these deaths are preventable. The Centre for Health and Resource Management on Wednesday released a recent study on reportage of maternal deaths, conducted from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2014 in 11 panchayats of Maner and Phulwarisharif blocks of Patna district. "Health officers make informal efforts to hide maternal deaths and prove it as non-maternal death. There is a culture of fear of reporting events with negative outcome," says the report which analyses 14 maternal deaths that occurred during the survey period.
