Maternal deaths are still a significant problem in India despite the introduction of a cash incentive scheme to encourage women to give birth in proper health facilities more than ten years ago. The initiative has led to an increase in the number of mothers accessing adequate health facilities when preparing to give birth, but it has not brought about a dramatic reduction in maternal mortality rates – particularly in the poorer parts of the country.
