Measles is a highly contagious virus. It can be spread through a cough or sneeze before a person even knows they have it. The virus is capable of living on surfaces for a long period of time, which makes it harder to track transmission.  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials said symptoms of measles appear about one to two weeks after exposure. Symptoms may include runny nose, watery eyes, cough and a high fever. Eventually, a red rash will appear on the face and down the body. Most patients recover from measles. However, some patients have serious complications and some even die.  The CDC reported that one out of every 20 children with measles will contract pneumonia. One out of 1,000 will develop encephalitis (swelling of the brain), which can cause convulsions and leave a child deaf or with mental retardation.
