“Boys should understand that when a girl says ‘no’ it means no,” reads the manual that India’s Health Ministry is now handing out across the country, to educate adolescents about their peers, sex, gender-based violence, and human attraction. Considering our government has recently been in the news for cases of forced nationalism, amongst other seemingly backward steps, it is a welcome change to see the same people try to inculcate more forward-thinking values in children that appear to be taking a much more sensitive approach. After an announcement in Delhi, about Government schools giving young girls ‘menstruation lessons’, this manual is definitely going down a path we’d all like to get behind.
