Our world is facing critical sustainable development challenges, where our future will depend upon our collective capacity and ability to learn and change. This means putting education first. And the time is now to ensure that Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is in the final iteration of a post 2015 development agenda.

These are the core messages that will be discussed on 10 January 2014 at UN Headquarters in New York, during a panel discussion organized by UNESCO, the Government of the Dominican Republic and the Government of the Republic of Mauritius that will showcase how ESD can help to create sustainable and resilient societies. Success stories from the Dominican Republic, Mauritius, Nepal and Viet Nam will highlight the important contribution of education to climate change adaptation and mitigation.

The panel takes place during the 7th meeting of the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals (6-10 January). The Open Working Group is elaborating a proposal for Sustainable Development Goals. Climate change and disaster risk reduction are two important issues on the agenda of the meeting.
