The much-acclaimed National Award-winning Tamil film Sringaram - Dance of Love has made a grand return to cinemas, coinciding with the iconic Margazhi music and dance festival in Chennai. Revered as a cinematic masterpiece rooted in the Devadasi era of early 20th-century India, Sringaram is celebrated for its historical depth, artistic brilliance, and universal appeal.

A Legacy of Excellence

Released in 2008, Sringaram swept multiple prestigious awards, including three National Awards and two Tamil Nadu State Awards. These accolades reflect the combined genius of Lalgudi G. Jayaraman, National Award for Best Music Direction; Saroj Khan, National Award for Best Choreography; Madhu Ambat, National Award for Best Cinematography; Thota Tharani, Tamil Nadu State Award for Best Production Design; Rukhmini Krishnan, Tamil Nadu State Award for Best Costume Design; and Prasad Laboratories, National Award for Best Lab Work.

Director’s Vision Reimagined

Speaking about the re-release, director Sharada Ramanathan shared: “Sringaram is a film that will resonate across generations. It is deeply rooted in Indian history and culture, yet it conveys a universal message. I’m thrilled that after its international journey, it’s returning home in a grander form.”

The film also marked the acting debut of Aditi Rao Hydari, who played the lead role with grace and intensity.

A Technological Renaissance

The re-release has been made possible through an extensive restoration process. Director Sharada Ramanathan recounted the challenges: “Restoring Sringaram was a formidable task, starting with locating the original film negative at Prasad Lab. The restoration involved repairing damaged sections, scanning, aligning, and colour grading. We also prepared a state-of-the-art audio mix to ensure a contemporary viewing experience.”

Thanks to cutting-edge technology, the film now dazzles in 4K format, offering both nostalgic and new audiences an immersive cinematic experience.

Cinematic Revival at Its Best

PVR Cinemas, Chennai, graciously offered a platform for the re-release, ensuring the film coincides with the world’s largest cultural festival. Audiences have responded with standing ovations, heartfelt applause, and a renewed appreciation for the film's timeless narrative. “The response has been overwhelming. Audiences feel they are watching a film of today, not one made over a decade ago. This re-release has breathed new life into Sringaram, affirming the enduring power of cinema.” — Sharada Ramanathan

As Tamil Nadu continues to celebrate its rich cultural heritage, Sringaram’s triumphant return promises an enchanting cinematic journey.
