Gori Tere Pyaar Mein is a full on entertaining movie with good humour, acting & few emotional scenes. The treatment of the movie is quite different and quite refreshing.
Shriram (Imran Khan) is a care free, party loving flirtatious & irresponsible type of guy from a South Indian family (Bangalore Tamilian) who even skips his relatives funeral to continue partying (with Esha Gupta in a guest appearance). He is always addressed as ‘Kaala Dhabba’ meaning the black spot by his father.
Even though he is going around with her friend, He tries to flirt with Kareena Kapoor Khan (Diya) and gets thrown out of the wedding function of her girl friend’s brother. Diya is a social worker (“NGO type”) and Shriram & Diya bump into each other at his family’s Mall opening function where Diya exposes the Minister who is a Chief Guest. Her fiery and innovative approach makes Shriram fall in love with her. She calls him Shridevi since his name sounds “South Indian type”.
After being romantically linked for a short period, they break up, since Diya doesn’t approve of Shriram buying a swanky car off the commission gained by brokering a plot of land which Diya had earmarked for an orphanage
Shriram’s parents think that marriage will change & make him a responsible person and plan to get him married to Vasudha (Shraddha Kapoor). Vasudha is in love with a North Indian sardar and reveals the same to Shriram. Shriram also shares with Vasudha his love relationship and break up with Diya. And the rest of the story is about Shriram running away from his wedding and getting back Diya in his life from a village called Jhoomli where she has been staying for her NGO work. And from thereon, it’s about how he helps her and the villagers get the bridge built in spite of various obstacles by the village Sarpanch Lateshbhai (Anupam Kher) which will connect them to schools, hospitals easily.
You will really enjoy the humourous scenes like ‘The Traffic Jam’, Imraan running away from his wedding, Imraan’s interview with Kareena’s Dad, Minister’s mother’s death homage and emotional scenes with his pet – a crab called ‘Sandy’.
It is Imraan Khan who carries the whole film single handedly, looks very confident and superstar material. Kareena Kapoor Khan is always suberb in her acting. In spite of the age difference, their on – screen chemistry is good and Kareena looks pretty as usual. Shradha Kapoor too looks pretty and plays her part quite well. Anupam Kher (in a short villain type of role after a long time) is his usual self. Dialogues are good and the ‘Tooh’ song is well shot.
Punit Malhotra’s direction is good. The way he has recreated the Tamil wedding scene and the Gujarati village of Jhoomli show that he is very good at adding ethnic detail to the cinematography.
Gori Tere Pyaar Mein is a soft romantic feature that nicely brings out social issues of out-of-community marriage, political high handedness in rural areas and the determination that well educated urban dwellers can show when they are sensitized to the problems faced by the rest of the country.
To sum it all, Kareena and Imran have come together for a movie that will connect with the audiences. It may not win accolades but the intention with which the film has been made, that of pure entertainment, is achieved.
Go watch, enjoy & get entertained.
