A Quiet Place is directed by John Krasinski and it stars Emily Blunt and himself. Who knew that the guy from the TV show Office (The U.S. version) could direct one of the best thrillers in recent memory. The concept of the film is simple “If they hear you, they hunt you”. But the execution of this very concept is where the magic lies. Making an almost silent thriller film is outright a unique and daunting task. Under this sci-fi thriller is a heartfelt story of the trials and tribulations of an ordinary family.

The movie is set in a world where monsters have taken over. These creatures can hear even the faintest of sounds but can’t see. Thus, the characters must avoid making noise. They only communicate using sign language.  Almost the whole movie is set in a farm and revolves around a family trying to survive. Most post-apocalyptic movies deal with aftermath of the event or how to stop another, but what this movie does right is that it grounds the whole end of the world to this family’s day to day routine. John and Emily are married in real life and their chemistry was quite good. Blunt is well known for her acting chops and she definitely doesn’t disappoint. The scene in the bathtub, in particular, is one of the most nerve racking things I’ve ever seen in film. On the other hand, Krasinski’s performance of a protective father is at par with Blunt. But the real show stealers were the kids, Noah Jupe and Millicent Simmonds. Simmonds plays the role of a child with hearing impairment. The dynamic between her and her father (John) was relatable.

Solely based on technicality, the film is really good to say the very least, but it’s the story that’s more captivating. It walks a fine line between scary and emotional. John and Emily’s characters just want to do what’s best for their children and that’s the core of the movie. The question of how far you will go for your kids, is what drives this masterpiece. Parents give their everything to protect their children and often kids don’t understand that. In the movie Simmonds thinks that the reason for her little brother dying is her, so she blames herself and refuses to lead a normal life despite her father’s attempts at trying otherwise. This movie has a lot to say about interpersonal relationships. The nuanced performances by the cast elevates this otherwise satisfactory movie to another level.

Oddly enough A Quiet Place is a treat both to your eyes and ears. Marco Beltrami’s sound design will make you jump in your seat and your eyes will be glued to the screen for the entirety of the film. Everything about the film screams brilliancy. You need to watch it on the big screen. It’s great time at the cinema. You will definitely not regret it. Make sure to not make a sound.
