Desperate times call for desperate measures. Also, practical ones. Fledgling journalist Rehan Ali (Vishal Singh) meets with a fatal car accident while riding pillion behind his friend Rajiv (Amol Parashar). His distraught parents (Sachin Khedekar, Kitu Gidwani) mourn his inevitable demise at the Mumbai hospital but a deadline lurks. Actor Dev Kapoor's (Prosenjit Chatterjee) daughter Riya is in dire need of a heart transplant in Pune. The clock ticks for Rehan's parents to pull the plug on their son, making him a donor for the girl. Once they agree to do that, the real story begins.

The heart needs to be rushed from Mumbai to Pune, a 160 km stretch of road in 2.5 hours during peak hours. Even though the mission has the backing of the initially reluctant Joint Traffic Commissioner Gurbir Singh (Jimmy Sheirgill), it is still a tough assignment ahead. Traffic Constable Ramdas Godbole (Manoj Bajpayee) volunteers, also as redemption for accepting a bribe some time ago. Accompanying him are Rajiv and Dr. Abel Fernandez (Parambrata Chatterjee), a cardiac surgeon.

The clock is ticking, the police jeep's wireless is malfunctioning and it is a long road ahead. Parallel tracks intersect; tension ratchets but the poster already told you that the characters involved create history. It is the journey there that counts.

Remade from the director's 2011 Malayalam original of the same name, Traffic is based on an actual incident in Chennai in August, 2008 when Constable B Mohan drove at record speed with a young man's heart to be transplanted to a 9-year-old girl. Traffic trims certain subplots in the remake and endeavours to keep the narrative a little more linear. It adds to the pace. It is also an improvement on the technical front, but somewhere falters when it comes to keeping a consistent tone of tension. The profusion of multiple tracks and characters may get confusing for the casual viewer so make sure you pay attention.

Despite the wavering tautness, Traffic manages to serve up a surprisingly good thriller with its share of whistle-worthy moments.
