July and August have seen Life OK bring in two new shows -- Ek Nayi Umeed, a medical drama first telecast in mid -July. With its coherent script, fine star cast and ticking action, the show has won its spurs, as a flagship programme. In end- August, the channel introduced Zindagi Abhi Baaki Hai Mere Ghost, a horror comedy. Here too, the cast is lined with actors of merit like Tiku Talsania, Anita Kanwal, Smita Bansal, Tanaaz Irani, etc. The young male lead Dhruv Raj Sharma is a known face on the ad circuit. He brings a touch of freshness with a natural helpless charm to his role. His house and fishing boat usurped and smashed, Yug, the hero finds himself on the streets. Looking for shelter, he enters the local bhoot bangla. Here starts his misadventures with the resident ghosts of the house; their back story unfurls. Set in Goa, special effects have the ghosts look presentable and we are spared all the screeching and horrendous looks. So far, the show seems appealing. This is Life OK?s first look at the comedy horror genre. The channel which has explored the genre is SAB TV. The channel?s first foray with horror comedy was Bhootwala Serial. It was also India?s first?horror?- comedy show. A group of friends move into a house and the resident ghosts do everything to evict them. It parodied the stereotypical aspects of?the desi horror shows with evil looking female ghosts, menacing laughter, etc. The cast was led by Rajesh Kumar, a reputed comic actor; this in-house show did a 92 episode run. Optimystix Entertainment?s Pritam, Pyaare Aur Woh, went better with over 100 ?plus episodes. This horrific delight was a new approach to ghost stories. Two bumbling brothers Pritam (Siddharth Sagar) and Pyaare (Prasad Barve), who accidentally get famous solving ghost buster cases. Taking that seriously, they setup a laboratory where they research and create unique gadgets, which are actually of no use in trapping ghosts! You may think that ?horror comedy? is a relatively new phenomenon, not just on television, but primarily in films too. Comedy is an intrinsic part of the horror genre, necessary in order to keep these films entertaining. The comic elements in standard horror movies are the macabre in service of the guffaw. Whoopi Goldberg?s 1990?s blockbuster movie Ghost showed how audiences would crack up amidst a heavy s?ance scene, as the eccentric psychic. Closer to home, Sardar ji, and a Punjabi film has wowed audiences not just in India, but in USA, Canada, UK, etc. with Punjabi speaking audiences. It stars ?Diljit Dosanjh as a desi ghost buster who is called to London to exorcise a ghost from a haunted castle.? The twist in the tale: instead of busting her, he falls for her! It?s too early to say, but no harm speculating: Will Zindagi Abhi Baaki Hai Mere Ghost adds one more feather in the Life OK cap?
