The International Film Festival of Delhi 2026 launches a dynamic platform uniting mainstream and independent cinema, featuring WIFF Mumbai collaborations, curated showcases, and conversations shaping the future of filmmaking in India.

International Film Festival of Delhi 2026: A New Platform for Cinema and Collaboration

From 25th to 31st March 2026, the International Film Festival of Delhi (IFFD) unfolds as an ambitious new cultural initiative, bringing together filmmakers, storytellers and industry voices in what promises to be a dynamic celebration of cinema. Conceived as a platform that bridges mainstream and independent filmmaking, the festival is already generating excitement for the scale of its vision and the diversity of its programming.

Among its most significant collaborations this year is with the Waterfront Indie Film Festival (WIFF) Mumbai, which brings to Delhi its specially curated WIFF Select showcase. The selection features independent films by Divya Kharnare, Tathagata Ghosh, Nishi Dugar, Teena Kaur Pasricha and Varun Tandon—filmmakers whose work reflects the breadth, urgency and creative courage of India’s independent cinema landscape.

Beyond Screenings: The Panel

Extending beyond screenings, WIFF Mumbai also contributes to the intellectual discourse of the festival through a panel titled “Independent Films: Opportunities and Challenges.” Curated and moderated by Vinta Nanda, the session brings together filmmakers who are actively reshaping the way independent cinema is made, distributed and experienced in India today.

The panel includes Aranya Sahay, whose debut feature Humans in the Loop explores the intersection of technology, labour and marginalized communities; Tanmaya Shekhar and Moishree, their film Nukkad Naatak has travelled across India through a self-organised “cinema yatra,” creating a grassroots model of exhibition; Pubali Chaudhuri, celebrated screenwriter of Rock On!! and Kai Po Che!, who has recently moved into direction with her short film Chithi; and Barnali Ray Shukla, a writer, filmmaker and poet whose work spans award-winning documentaries and internationally recognised feature films.

The Realities and Possibilities

The panel is expected to open up conversations around the realities of independent filmmaking—financing constraints, production challenges, and the persistent struggle for visibility—as well as the new opportunities emerging through festivals, community-driven exhibition models, and digital platforms. At its heart lies a crucial question: how can independent filmmakers sustain their practice while retaining the creative freedom that defines their work?

A Shared Vision

Speaking about the collaboration, Vinta Nanda, Filmmaker, Founder Editor The Daily Eye, Co-Founder and Executive Director of WIFF Mumbai, notes, “I extend my thanks to Shri Kapil Mishra, Minister for Law & Justice, Labour, Employment, Development, Art & Culture, and Tourism; Festival Director Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra; especially to Hon’ble Chief Minister Rekha Gupta; and Sabbas Joseph of Wizcraft for envisioning and building what promises to become one of Delhi’s most important cinematic platforms.”

The Backbone of the Festival

The role of Wizcraft and Sabbas Joseph in shaping and executing the festival with the Government of Delhi stands out as a cornerstone of this initiative. Wizcraft’s experience and meticulous management meets the great vision of the Hon’ble Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and this has created a space that is not only expansive in scale but also inclusive in spirit—bringing together diverse cinematic voices under one roof.
