Evening Shadows, the feature film about a gay son coming out to his mother in small town India, has already garnered a lot of attention and critical acclaim all over the world. Now Mumbai audiences get a chance to see this film at the city’s LGBTQ film festival. Evening Shadows will be the Closing Film at the 9th KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival and will screen on Sunday May 27th at 9.30pm at the iconic Liberty Carnival Cinemas, Marine Lines.

Since its World Premiere at the Mardi Gras Film Festival, Sydney in February, the film was screened at the Bengaluru International Film Festival, Roze Filmdagen Amsterdam and Outfest Fusion, Los Angeles – to houseful shows and very warm audience reactions. The film also won the 'Free To be Me' award at Roze Filmdagen and was one of the strong runners up for Audience Awards at both Mardi Gras and Roze Filmdagen festivals.

Sridhar Rangayan, director of the film said, “This is homecoming for our film after its screenings across the world. We are hoping that the audiences in Mumbai will love the film and embrace its heartwarming story. We also hope it will awaken many more minds to greater acceptance and give out a string message about ‘together with pride’ which is this year’s Kashish festival theme.”

Mona Ambegaonkar who plays the lead role of the mother Vasudha said, “Our film Evening Shadows screened its trailer at the Kashish festival last year, and will now be the closing film this year. Nothing can be more appropriate or perfect. Most of our benefactors and contributors are from the community and support us with all their heart. This is my thank you to them, personally.”

“All that I stand for is somehow encapsulated in this film. The love, the fear of persecution, the protective instinct, the joy and triumph. To all my friends and family, this is my heart on film, for you”, she added emotionally.

“Sridhar has scored a double whammy. His highly acclaimed sensitive film on an orthodox couple facing the truth of their only son, Evening Shadows, will be the Closing Attraction at the biggest LGBTQ festival in South Asia, also a brainchild of Sridhar. A fitting tribute from a fabulous fest. And the film would have qualified even if Sridhar wasn’t the Kashish founder!”, said well-known actor Ananth Mahadevan who plays the stern father Damodar in the film.

The two young lead actors Devansh Doshi and Arpit Chaudhary expressed their delight in having the film shown to home audiences:

“The film has managed to receive widespread acclaim across the globe and it will be wonderful to share the experience with the people of Mumbai. I am sure the film will manage to strike an emotional chord with the audiences, and I hope people will turn up in large numbers”, said Devansh Doshi who plays Kartik.

“Evening Shadows as a movie has really touched a lot of hearts. It will be a special treat for everyone in Mumbai who wanted to watch this movie”, said Arpit Chaudhary who plays the love interest Aman.

Evening Shadows was given a UA certificate by the censor board. It is a crowdfunded film with more than 180 contributors across the world.

The 9th KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival is being held from May 23-27th at Liberty Carnival Cinemas and Metro INOX.
