Food Will Not Be Wasted Anymore: NIT Trichy To Set Up A Biogas Plant, Utilise Food Waste As Feed

In a laudable initiative, The National Institute of Technology, Trichy (NIT-T), has decided to set up a biogas plant in collaboration with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai. As a pilot project, the plant will be set up in one of the hostel cafeterias at the institute. The biogas produced here will be supplied to hostels for cooking. With this project, the benefits of a biogas plant will also be demonstrated to villages and towns. Further along, the facility will be established in five villages adopted by NIT-T under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan scheme of the government. The director in-charge of NIT-T, G Kannabiran, told The Times of India that the project will be funded by BARC while NIT-T will manage it and provide resources like space and skilled manpower for five years. The total cost of the project is Rs. 42,20,000.
