Picture This . . . Film Festival Offers Fresh, International Look At Those With Disabilities

Yes, it is an international disability film festival — the first one in Canada — but the films presented are not grim. Or depressing. Or preachy.
“We’ve had to constantly tell people that,” says Sheryl Lenthall, festival director. “There are people who volunteer now, who have volunteered for a decade, but when they first came to the festival they said, ‘I thought it would be depressing.’ I said, ‘Is there any other festival you would go to with that attitude?’ These are films. Whether it be the One World Film Festival or the Toronto International Film Festival or the Calgary International Film Festival, there are films that are about serious matters and then there are comedies and light-hearted films.”
