Urgent global issues get personal at Doc Fortnight, the Museum of Modern Art’s annual program of international non-fiction film.Many selections in the festival, which begins Friday, explore facets of the current refugee crisis in Europe and the Middle East, and take a long view of colonial legacies of previous centuries.

In film after film, however, the perspective has shifted.

“There are quite a few films of people taking over their own story,” said Sally Berger,assistant curator in MoMA’s department of film and an organizer of the Fortnight. “We weren’t looking for a theme, but somehow these films stood out as interesting and very timely.”
