A Mumbai-based non-profit organisation, SNEHA targets four large public health areas: maternal and newborn health, child health and nutrition, sexual and reproductive health and prevention of violence against women and children. Organised by SNEHA, the Dharavi Biennale aims to combine art and science, to highlight the contribution of the people of Dharavi to India’s economic and cultural life, and to share information on urban health. The Biennale invites Dharavi residents to meet, educate themselves on urban health, learn new skills, and produce challenging artworks. It is a collaboration between artists of all kinds, scientists and activists to develop locally resonant artworks that are authentic, honest and relevant. We joined hands with Poor-Box Productions and the Make-A-Difference Foundation who have developed a production of a the award-winning global play, the Vagina Monologues Over the last year, an ambitious series of events has been held. To date, 2000 people from Dharavi have travelled to different places in Mumbai to watch the show. Now it is coming home in a Hindi version for the people of Dharavi. The whole series has been organized and directed by Kaizaad Kotwal, who founded Poor-Box Productions along with Mahabanoo Mody Kotwal, and involves a stellar cast. Written by Eve Ensler, the Vagina Monologues has become a theatrical phenomenon. The celebrated play remains just as relevant, given the experiences of women and girls in India today.
