Taking a stand against child marriage- UCSD’s Anita Raj works to bring equality to women around the globe

Early marriage of girls increases their health risks, particularly in the context of pregnancy and delivery. They are more likely to experience complications in pregnancy, low birth weight infants and even maternal and infant mortality. They are more vulnerable to domestic violence in their marriages, restricted mobility from husbands and in-laws, and impeded access to education and economic opportunities. They are also more likely to come from and remain in poverty. These effects are not only a concern for the girl and her children, but for communities and societies, as they too lag behind in the context of poor education and development for women and girls.
