The study, initiated by gynaecologist Aarti Mantri in association with the Zilla Parishad (ZP) in around 40 ZP schools, found that over 30% girls suffered from anaemia. Besides, 70% of the girls were unaware of basic hygiene issues and still practiced open defecation, while 80% suffered from dental fluorosis. ?Jalna ZP chief executive officer Prema Deshbhratar said, "Maternal and child care is one of six focus areas of routine immunization (RI). Maternal mortality and infant mortality is a major challenge in the health sector. Scientific studies have proven that maternal health affects neonatal health and a major cause of poor maternal health is anaemia."?
