Kanan Devan to bring 3,000 growers of TN, Kerala under Rainforest Alliance

The RA certification is a global recognition bestowed upon over 100 types of crops and livestock such as coffee, tea, cocoa and fruit, for maintaining sustainable agriculture practices. This was announced by PT Siganporia, Chairman, while speaking at the ninth annual general meeting held in Munnar. Kanan Devan, one of the largest partly-employee-owned companies in the country, had recently received RA certification for its entire plantations at one shot.
The ‘Ripple’ brand of Kanan Devan is well accepted in the market while the company is planning to create a few more world-class brands. The Board of Directors declared a 15 per cent dividend for 2013-14 as was paid last year. The total payout is ₹1.16 crore. The turnover during the period saw a 10 per cent increase at ₹286.80 crore, while net profit rose 26 per cent to ₹15.54 crore. The participatory management structure of Kanan Devan is a unique business management model in the plantation sector. Out of the total 11,766 shareholders, 11,738 are from the employee category, comprising labourers, staff, executives, non-staff and ex-employees. Of these, labourers make the biggest chunk of 10,082. The minimum number of shares held per labourer is 300.
