The entire legal fraternity of Thane district had gathered at the Thane District and Sessions Court to promote green cover and combat global warming on the occasion of World Environment Day on Thursday. Representatives of various non-governmantal organizations (NGOs), para-legal services, advocates, judges and officials from the district legal services authority (DLSA), Thane, made their presence felt to support the noble cause. The event was organized by DLSA and a tree-plantation drive was also held which was headed by newly-appointed principal district and sessions judge R R Gandhi. The legal fraternity planted over a dozen of trees around the under-construction building. "We will continue to plant more trees in the complex and around the vicinity in the coming days," said Trimbak Kochwad, a member of DLSA. Addressing the audience, Gandhi said, "Everyone must plant or adopt at least one tree. This is one's primary responsibility towards protecting the environment." Citing the example of the 1952 drought, he said, ''We have not faced natural calamities like droughts for quite some time. But now, we are hearing about such situations every passing year. This shows that the situation is getting worse and the environment is facing a threat every day. We have to be more careful now and step ahead and grow more trees,'' said Gandhi.
