Nuclear Plants To Power Sustainable Development

Forgotten is the shock and despair triggered by the Fukushima power plant disaster about two years ago. Nuclear power is here to stay. In fact, according to a consensus emerging from an international conference, “for many countries nuclear power is a proven, clean, safe, and economical technology that will play an increasingly important role in achieving energy security and sustainable development goals in the 21st century”.

“I believe we can look ahead with confidence and optimism to the future of nuclear power in the 21st century,” International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano told an international conference on ‘Nuclear Power in the 21st Century’. After the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan in March 2011, “effective steps have been taken to make nuclear power plants safer everywhere”, he stressed.
