As per a poll of gender experts, Egypt has been rated as the worst country in terms of women’s
rights, reasons that have been stated range from sexual harassment, high rates of female genital
mutilation to increasing conservative Islamic groups .

The survey was conducted by the Thomson Reuters Foundation and the Comoros islands topped
the survey. The poll was conducted by more than 330 gender experts across 21 Arab League states
including as Syria. Egypt was followed by Iraq, which was in turn followed by Saudi Arabia, Syria and
Yemen.

“The social acceptability of everyday sexual harassment affects every woman in Egypt regardless of
age, professional or socio-economic background, marriage status, dress or behaviour,” stated Noora
Flinkman of HarassMap, an Egyptian campaign group.

Saudi Arabia ranked lowest on women’s participation in politics, discrimination at work, freedom of
movement and rights pertaining to property, but scored better than various other Arab states with
respect to education, healthcare, reproductive rights and gender equality.
