The number of women on company boards might not seem like it has much to do with the number of women who are killed or attacked by their partners at home, but it does.
Gender inequality is at the core of violence perpetrated against women.
That’s why outgoing Sex Discrimination Commissioner Elizabeth Broderick is absolutely correct when she says the battle against the scourge of domestic violence must be fought in the boardrooms and classrooms of the country. It cannot simply be left to our courtrooms.
While reflecting on her eight years as the nation’s primary advocate for gender equality, Ms Broderick told me about a woman she met at a domestic violence shelter.
