by The Daily Eye Team November 15 2013, 10:35 am Estimated Reading Time: 0 mins, 45 secsThe two panelists involved in the discussion were Sexual Aggression Peer
Advocate Dedicated Counselor Brooke Oliver-Hempenstall from Central
Michigan University’s Counseling Center and Westland senior Shelby Arnold,
a shelter advocate from the Women’s Aid Shelter in Mount Pleasant.
“We chose these panelists because we wanted to have a couple different
viewpoints from people who work with survivors of domestic violence and
sexual assault and have a lot of knowledge on those issues,” said OWL
member and Illinois senior Katie Browning.
The panel examined signs for when a loved one might be experiencing
domestic violence and how to get them to someone who can help while still
remaining supportive and focusing on what the survivor is comfortable with.
“If you notice changes in personality, the person becomes withdrawn,
isolated or less of themselves, these are signs that something might be
wrong.”
Women’s Empowerment Week will continue through Nov. 15.
