The Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project (TNHSP) is working towards reducing Tamil Nadu’s maternal mortality rate (MMR) to 45 per one lakh live births by 2017 from the current level of 79. The State had one of the lowest MMR in country, coming behind only Maharashtra and Kerala while the national MMR rate was 120. Towards achieving this objective, the TNHSP held a training session here on Thursday for obstetricians and gynaecologists of government hospitals, staff of Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and New Born Care (CEmONC) centres, medical officers of blood banks and doctors from eight western districts. M.S. Shanmugam, TNHSP Director, told journalists that experts were brought in as resource persons to share their experiences and best practices during the training. The CEmONC centres, of which there were 125 in the State, including three in Coimbatore, were in the frontlines of this effort to reduce maternal deaths.
