The gold, silver, and plastics contained inside it are highly valuable, and last year, the world threw away $52 billion worth of it. That’s one of the findings in a new report from the United Nations University (UNU), a research arm of the UN that examined how much e-waste each country discarded. In 2014, the United States generated 7.8 million tons, more than any other country, accounting for nearly 17 percent of the global total.
