Nurturing The Actor Within — A Journey Begins Here

Theatre has long been the crucible where some of India’s finest actors have discovered their mettle, and for over three decades, Ekjute Theatre Group has been at the helm of this transformation. Founded in 1981 by Nadira Zaheer Babbar, one of the most influential figures in Indian theatre, Ekjute has been consistently conducting its Annual Acting Workshop since 1990. This year’s edition, titled "Know the Actor in You," promises once again to shape raw talent into stage-ready performers and screen-worthy artists.

Scheduled from 14th May to 12th June 2025, the workshop will be conducted daily from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Plot No. 48, Aram Nagar Part-2, Versova, Mumbai – 400061. It is open to everyone passionate about acting, whether beginner or aspiring professional.

Legacy of Excellence

Ekjute’s workshops have long been a launchpad for talent that has gone on to make remarkable strides in Indian cinema, theatre, and OTT platforms. Alumni include the late Sushant Singh Rajput, Richa Chaddha, Rakul Preet Singh, Sayami Kher, Sumeet Vyas, Sonal Jha, Anshuman Pushkar, Parizaad Kolah, Parizaad Zorabian, and Pashmina Roshan—all of whom began their journey in front of the camera on the Ekjute stage.

Over the years, the workshop has been conducted by industry stalwarts like Atul Tiwari, Waman Kendre, Ashish Vidyarthi, Anant Mahadevan, and Makarand Deshpande. Their association has brought rigorous training and valuable insight to participants, shaping not only technique but also artistic temperament.

Participants will undergo extensive theatre orientation covering a wide range of essential aspects including:

  1. Speech and Diction – Best preparation for delivering powerful monologues and dialogues.
  2. Voice Modulation & Dialogue Delivery – Fine-tuning vocal expressiveness.
  3. Body Language & Movement – Learning how the body supports the actor's emotional and psychological expression.
  4. Improvisation & Emotional Memory – Enhancing spontaneous creativity and emotional depth.
  5. Stagecraft, Rhythm, Dance & Music – Understanding the dynamics of stage performance.

The training combines discipline with play, structure with spontaneity—essential ingredients for growth in the performing arts.

Nadira Babbar: A Pillar of Indian Theatre

Born into a family rooted in cultural and political thought, Nadira Zaheer Babbar is the daughter of Sayyed Sajjad Zaheer, a founding member of the Progressive Writers Association and IPTA, and Razia Sajjad Zaheer, an Urdu writer and academic. Nadira’s artistic journey started at the National School of Drama, followed by prestigious scholarships to study at the Berliner Ensemble and National Theatre of Weimar, where she worked under legendary theatre figures like Fritz Benevitz, Wolfgang Heinz, and Ursula Kchimskye.

Her notable works include directing Maxim Gorky’s The Lower Depths and Agha Hashar Kashmiri’s Yahudi Ki Ladki with Ekjute, as well as acting in films like Bride and Prejudice, Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities, and The Married Woman.
