Holly Jackson, the bestselling author of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, returns with a gripping mystery that delves into the complexities of truth, lies, and the human psyche in The Reappearance of Rachel Price. This thrilling novel weaves together the past and the present as 18-year-old Bel, who has always lived in the shadow of her mother Rachel's disappearance, faces the unimaginable—her mother’s return after 16 years. As the story unfolds, so do the lives of Bel and her family, in ways that are both shocking and unexpected. Fans of true crime, mystery, and psychological thrillers will find themselves hooked from the very first page.
I’m quite sure you’ve heard of The Good Girl’s Guide To Murder—the first of three novels in the series—about a girl named Pip, short for Pippa Fitz-Amobi, who begins investigating a murder that occurred in her town for a school project. The Good Girl’s Guide To Murder is now a TV show, streaming on BBC as well as Netflix. I loved The Good Girl’s Guide To Murder book series so much that I couldn’t resist picking up the author’s new release, The Reappearance of Rachel Price, when I saw it sitting on a shelf in a bookstore.
This book is about an 18-year-old girl named Bel, who has always been living in the shadow of her mother, Rachel Price’s disappearance. Her mother vanished 16 years ago, quite mysteriously, and since then has been believed to be dead. Bel wants nothing more than for everyone to forget about it, but she has no choice but to face the past when she’s forced to confront the sudden reappearance of her mother. Quite literally, as the title suggests, Rachel Price suddenly returns, back from the dead, and back into the lives of Bel and her family.
I don’t know about you, but I would most definitely have over a million questions if my mother was Rachel Price and she reappeared, out of nowhere, after 16 years. And that’s exactly how Bel is—she can’t stop questioning her mother’s unbelievable story about why and how she vanished, and she wonders if her story’s even real. And so, Bel decides to play detective.
I’m a huge fan of mysteries, and I was pretty ecstatic to read this one. As soon as I started, the story gripped me instantly; it was full of shocking twists and turns. Bel is a character full of teen angst, she’s prickly and strong-willed, and isn’t afraid of doing what it takes to uncover the truth. The story revolves around her whole family, and every chapter was full of secrets, lies, and twists, and if I’m being completely honest, this book really kept me on my toes.
I didn’t finish the book in one day, but I do remember staying up until 2 AM when I was almost finished with it because I simply could not sleep without knowing what happened next. And I suppose that is every mystery writer’s intention, isn’t it? To keep you turning every page, so curious to unravel the mystery—have you reading until the very end.
To be honest, The Reappearance of Rachel Price was quite frustrating for me, and it didn’t make a lot of sense at first. It had me guessing until the very end, with a lot of jaw-dropping moments in between. It was a slow book, and I felt that it stretched on for too long, which was kind of unnecessary, and it included many red herrings and clues that threw me off.
The way Holly Jackson writes is so captivating and I absolutely adore it, and this book had me guessing until the very end. Unlike The Good Girl’s Guide To Murder, it’s not a book that will have you wishing you could read it again for the first time, but it will leave you still in shock and disbelief after you’re finished with it.
In my opinion, The Reappearance of Rachel Price was a quick and fun read, and I would highly recommend it if you’re a fan of true crime thrillers.
