OVER TO THE CONVERSATION WITH BILAL A JAN

The Daily Eye: Bilal, thank you for joining us today. Your documentary on Jawahar Lal Kaul has garnered a lot of attention. Could you start by telling us what inspired you to make this film?

Bilal A Jan: Thank you for having me. I was deeply inspired by Kaul's unending struggle despite being visually impaired. His achievements and dedication to social work moved me profoundly. It's not just his visual impairment but his relentless spirit and enthusiasm for creating positive change that compelled me to tell his story. He is a true role model for young people, both in India and beyond.

The Daily Eye: What elements did you find essential in creating a successful biographical documentary about Kaul?

Bilal A Jan: For me, the key elements were a major character, high stakes, exclusive access, and a satisfying conclusion. Kaul's life story embodies all these components. His journey is filled with internal and external conflicts, heartbreaking hardships, and significant accomplishments. I discovered each of these aspects while working on this project, which ranks him alongside influential social activists like Mother Teresa and Baba Amte.

The Daily Eye: What challenges did you face during the filming process?

Bilal A Jan: There were several challenges. The biggest was securing financing, which, thankfully, I managed with the help of friends like Suhail Bakshi and Dr. Ali Mohd Rather. Another challenge was understanding and interacting with visually impaired individuals, as this was my first film on disability issues. Filming locations were another hurdle since Kaul's work spans across India. We had to shoot in phases in places like Srinagar, Delhi, and Amritsar, which took about a year to complete.

The Daily Eye: Can you elaborate on the research and production aspects of the film?

Bilal A Jan: Absolutely. The research and script were co-written by myself and Dr Chandra Nisha Singh. The cinematography was handled by Pranshu Bharadwaj and Raja Shabir, with Ashiq Hussain editing and Farooq Masoodi narrating the film. The production process was rigorous, but our team’s dedication and the support from Kaul himself made it possible.

The Daily Eye: What do you hope audiences take away from this documentary?

Bilal A Jan: I hope the audience sees beyond Kaul’s visual impairment and recognizes the tremendous impact one individual can have on society. Kaul's life is a beacon of hope and an inspiration for others to give back to their communities. I want people to understand that physical limitations do not define one's ability to contribute meaningfully to society.

Bilal A Jan’s documentary "J L Kaul: A Man of Action" is a testament to the human spirit's resilience and the power of dedication. As the film continues to make waves at various festivals, including the 16th International Documentary Film Festival of Kerala and MIFF BAZAR 2024, it stands as a powerful narrative of overcoming adversity and making a significant impact on society.
