Serving as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, he championed inclusive policies like MGNREGA and the National Rural Health Mission. Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, West Punjab (now Pakistan), Singh endured the upheaval of Partition in 1947. A brilliant academic, he earned degrees from Panjab University, Cambridge, and Oxford, specializing in economics. His career spanned academia, international organizations, and Indian governance, where he held key roles such as Chief Economic Adviser and Reserve Bank Governor.
In 1991, Singh was appointed Finance Minister during an economic crisis. His groundbreaking reforms dismantled the Licence Raj, opened up the economy, and set India on a path to globalization and sustained growth. These efforts earned him global recognition as a transformative leader.
As Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, Singh focused on inclusive development.
